Arcadia, CA ( - Saturdays $250,000 California Cup Derby at Santa Anita has become an important race for west coast Kentucky Derby hopefuls after California Chrome used it to begin his championship 2014 campaign. This years 1 1/16-mile edition has drawn a field of eight with Acceptance getting the nod as the 4-5 morning line favorite. Acceptance, owned by E. W. and Judy Johnston and Robert Riggio, will start from post 2 with Elvis Trujillo again riding. Acceptance comes into the Cal Cup Derby off a victory in the King Glorious Stakes on Dec. 14, the same stakes that California Chrome won to propel him into his 3-year-old season. The 2013 King Glorious was the final stakes ever run at Hollywood Park and is now conducted at Los Alamitos. Weve liked this horse from Day One, said former jockey Kenny Black, assistant to trainer Don Warren, but we would have never expected him to do what he did in his first couple of outs (winning his debut by 13 1/4 lengths), then taking his next start (a 1 1/4-length triumph in the Golden State Juvenile at seven furlongs in 1:21.60 at Santa Anita on Nov. 1). He followed that with a victory in the King Glorious. Hes doing well and hes worked well. He looks like a million dollars right now. He looks to be doing as good as he can be doing, I guess. Ive been helping Don in the mornings off and on for 20, 30 years. We had a champion with Acclimation, but this horse, Acceptance, is pretty close. This is a nice horse. Acceptance has banked $257,600, making him the leading money earner in the field. Breaking from the rail post will be 5-2 second pick Tough Sunday with Tyler Baze in the saddle. The 3-year-old is owned by his breeder Nick Alexander and trained by Steve Miyadi. Tough Sunday won for the first time going seven furlongs on Dec. 28 at Santa Anita in his third career start. With a win, a second and a third he has earned $48,720. Pulmarack, second to Acceptance in the King Glorious, is the 9-2 third choice and will start from post 7 with Eclipse Award winner Drayden Van Dyke in the saddle. The colt is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams with Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer training. Pulmarack broke his maiden his third time out at Santa Anita on Oct. 17 and eight weeks later dropped a three-length decision in the King Glorious. He has earned $74,100. The complete field for the Cal Cup Derby in post position order: Tough Sunday, Tyler Baze, 5-2; Acceptance, Elvis Trujillo, 4-5; Mischief Clem, Kent Desormeaux, 6-1; Neveradoubt, Joe Talamo, 30-1; Kluszewski, Rafael Bejarano, 8-1; Chanito, Brandon Boulanger, 50-1; Pulmarack, Drayden Van Dyke, 9-2 and Avati Bello, Mike Smith, 20-1 The Cal Cup Derby has an approximate post time Saturday of 5:30 p.m. ET.
.com) - Patrik Elias registered the winner in the shootout as New Jersey nipped Toronto 2-1 at Prudential Center on Wednesday.
.Y. -- The "for sale" sign is up at the Buffalo Bills with the hiring of financial and legal advisers who may begin talking with prospective buyers within the next month.
. In mens doubles, Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil and American Jack Sock reached the quarter-finals with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Croatian Mate Pavic and Andre Sa of Brazil.
. The 22-year-old Spanish midfielder recently signed a new three-year contract with Chelsea, and after spending last season on loan with Valencia in La Liga, Romeu will move to the Bundesliga for the 2014-15 campaign.
. The cause of his death is as of yet undetermined, but police said foul play is not suspected.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - John Elways philosophy is to address immediate needs in free agency, even though some of his own veterans may prove too pricey to keep around. Eric Decker and Knowshon Moreno both said theyd love to stay in Denver, but they might find more lucrative offers elsewhere when free agency begins in a month. Unlike the Seattle Seahawks, who throttled the Broncos in the Super Bowl, Denver has a high-priced quarterback who takes up a good chunk of the salary cap, limiting what the team can spend elsewhere. Mannings salary cap charge for 2014 is $17.5 million, same as last season, which was more than Seattles entire starting defence and about 25 times as much as Russell Wilsons $681,000 cap number. "Yeah, but Ill tell you right now its worth it for us to have Peyton Manning," Elway said. "Thats just part of when you get a quality quarterback like that that we have in Peyton Manning. You know thats going to be a big chunk of your salary cap, but we got to figure out ways to find the right players." At the right prices. Elway said he has no problem continuing to build a team around Manning even though nobody knows how long No. 18 will be in the Broncos huddle beyond next season. "Well, were going to keep building like Peyton is going to be here," Elway said. "And you know, when Peyton decides to hang em up, we have expectations hopefully to make that transition." Manning confirmed during Super Bowl week that he intends to play next season, pending clearance from his doctor at his annual checkup next month to see if his surgically repaired neck is sound, which seems like a formality given the way he played last season when he won his fifth MVP award. Manning and the Broncos are out to do something that no team has done since the Buffalo Bills in 1993 — make it back to the Super Bowl the year after losing it. Elway, the teams executive vice-president, had been busy on a blueprint long before the Super Bowl blowout. He knows he could lose Decker, Moreno and guard Zane Beadles on offencce and he has to rebuild a defence that was obliterated by an injury epidemic.dddddddddddd The Broncos have 18 unrestricted and three restricted free agents, but Elway has to be prudent because big deals are looming next year for Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas and maybe Von Miller. Hes hit the jackpot in free agency two years in a row, first with Manning in 2012 and then with Wes Welker, Louis Vasquez, Shaun Phillips, Terrance Knighton and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie last year. Elway expects to be busy again this year. He has about $25 million in projected cap space right now but could free up more by asking Champ Bailey and Jacob Tamme to restructure their contracts and by releasing Chris Kuper and Joel Dreessen. Elway said using free agency to address immediate needs gives the Broncos freedom in the draft. "We dont have to sit there and reach for some guy because of a need. So, if we can get rid of really the absolute needs that we need to do in free agency, then that opens it up, we can fire free at the draft, take the best players," he said. If Moreno leaves, the Broncos have Montee Ball ready to step in as the featured back. He came on strong down the stretch, finishing the season with 120 carries for 561 yards and four touchdowns. Nearly a third of his carries moved the sticks, ranking third in the league and tops among rookies. His pass protection also vastly improved. "We have high expectations out of Montee," Elway said. "Well see how things flush out with Knowshon." Decker, who has 32 TD catches over the last three years, would be missed. But Manning has plenty of other targets and teammate Bubba Caldwell, another unrestricted free agent, could prove a cheaper alternative. "This is an organization any player wants to come to," Decker said. "They treat you first class, its a winning organization. Theyve built a culture thats phenomenal. I would love to play here and unfortunately it isnt something thats always in my control."
