CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Andy Dalton isnt shying away from the comparisons any longer. Until now, the Bengals fourth-year quarterback has avoided linking his name with some of the NFLs best, even as he accomplished things that few others could claim. Thats changed with his ongoing negotiations over a contract extension. Its time to accentuate the positives from his first three seasons. "Well, Im very confident in what Ive done," he said. "The people who are the critics, they look at all of the negatives. They dont look at all of the stuff that Ive accomplished. They dont look at that Im one of three quarterbacks in the history of the NFL to do certain things. They dont look at that kind of stuff. "They want to find ways to tear me down, but Im not worried about that. They can say whatever they want. All that matters is what everyone believes in this organization and what I believe in myself." There are a lot of rarified numbers he can cite: -- Dalton, Dan Marino and Peyton Manning are the only ones to throw 20 or more touchdown passes in each of their first two seasons. -- Dalton is one of only five starting quarterbacks to lead their teams to the playoffs in each of their first three seasons, along with the Rams Pat Haden, the Dolphins Marino, the Browns Bernie Kosar and the Ravens Joe Flacco. -- If the Bengals reach the playoffs again this season, hell join Flacco as the only starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to reach the playoffs in each of their first four seasons. -- Dalton has already set numerous franchise records for passing. He threw for a club-record 4,293 yards and 33 touchdowns last season. The big blemish: 0-3 in the post-season. Dalton has given some of his worst performances in the playoffs, setting up three straight opening-round exits. Dalton is entering the final year on his contract. Hes emphasizing those regular-season accomplishments while making his case for a new deal. "We are obviously comparing guys in their first three years -- what they have done, what they are doing now, and presenting them with stuff," Dalton said. "That is how we have come up with what we are wanting." Whos the best comparison? "Lets see here: Flacco, (Aaron) Rodgers, (Drew) Brees. Who else? Matt Ryan. All those top guys," he said. His biggest shortcoming also leaves him in some pretty good company. Hes one of seven NFL quarterbacks who who have lost an opening playoff game three seasons in a row, according to STATS. The others: Warren Moon (4), Otto Graham (3), Y.A. Tittle (3), Bert Jones (3), Joe Montana (3) and Randall Cunningham (3). "This is a big year," Dalton said. "Just from the standpoint of OK, now Ive been through it three times now. Ive played well. Ive been to the playoffs. Obviously the playoffs havent gone well for us, but its not just me." Dalton turned the ball over three times in the second half of a 27-10 loss to San Diego at Paul Brown Stadium that extended Cincinnatis playoff misery. The Bengals havent won a playoff game in 23 years. Their three straight opening-game losses tie the league record. Dalton has studied video of the playoff loss during the off-season. "We had chances in the game. Obviously the turnovers killed us," he said. "I wish I would have done some things differently in the game. It didnt turn out that way. Youve got to take the good things that happened last season and improve on them." Coach Marvin Lewis fell to 0-5 in the playoffs but got a year added to his contract, which now runs through 2015. He has reassured Dalton privately and insisted publicly that the quarterback can take the franchise deep into the playoffs and end all those streaks of futility and doubts about his ability. "It means a lot," Dalton said. "I feel like Ive done a lot since being here to earn that trust, to earn that support."
.com) - Roosevelt Jones had 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists to lead No.
. A steady downpour and low temperatures were predicted for much of the night. No makeup date was immediately announced, although it was determined that the game will not be part of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
. -- The Phoenix Coyotes have won three in a row for the first time in 4 1/2 months, and theyve done it just in time for the stretch run to the playoffs.
. Catch all the action on TSN starting at 10:30pm et/7:30pm pt. Toronto won at Denver and Utah, but lost in Portland and Sacramento. The Kings loss was the most recent game for the Raptors.
. Kyle Shanahan was hired as offensive co-ordinator Monday after spending the previous four years in the same role with the Washington Redskins.SHANGHAI - Yuzuru Hanyus free skate at the Cup of China began with a scary crash with another skater in warm-ups that left him on his back on the ice, gasping for air and with blood streaming across his neck and face from a cut on his chin.Visibly shaken and with gauze wrapped around his head, the reigning Olympic and world champion from Japan decided to stay in the competition and struggled through his program, falling five times. He nearly won the title anyway.Maxim Kovtun of Russia landed just enough jumps to take the gold with 243.34 points, less than six points ahead of Hanyu in second (237.55).Hanyu was skating backward at a high speed during the warm-ups when he collided with defending champion Yan Han of China and went down hard on the ice. He lay for several seconds on his back before being helped up and receiving treatment from doctors. Both skaters returned moments later to compete with matching bandages on their chins.Yan tumbled on his opening two jumps and popped his third, eventually finishing in sixth place.Hanyus program appeared even worse, with falls on his quad salchow and quad toeloop at the start and three more spills toward the end. He was showered with stuffed bears and flowers from the crowd and then broke down in sobs when his scores appeared, showing him in first place.Kovtun followed with his program next, skating just cleanly enough to knock him down to second.Hanyu received stiches on his head and chin and was checked for a concussion after the competition. His coach, Brian Orser, said he would fly back to Japan on Sunday to receive further treatment.I know that tomorrow hes going to feel like he was hit by a car, he said. Both of these boys are going to feel awful.Orser said he allowed Hanyu to compete because he wasnt exhibiting any physical signs of a concussion after the crash — his eyes were clear and he was speaking normally, even making jokes. He was immediately determined he wanted to compete, and for me, I wanted to make sure he was healthy enough, he said. I told him, This is not the time to be a hero. You have to take care of yourself. The crash even had an effect on Kovtun, who said he couldnt concentrate on his own preeparations and put in a flawed performance.ddddddddddddWhen they suspended the warm-up, my coach tried to calm me down, he said. It was hard for me to pull myself together.American Richard Dornbush finished third. In the ladies competition, Russian Elizaveta Tuktamysheva won her fourth event of the season, while her countrywoman Julia Lipnitskaia fell apart in her free skate and slipped to second after leading following the short program.Tuktamysheva is starting to fulfil the promise she showed at the age of 12, when she broke onto the scene with a runner-up finish at the senior Russian championships. Although shes had some success since then, her progress has been slowed by injuries, growth spurts and inconsistent results. Now nearly 18, Tuktamysheva is finding confidence on the ice again — something she credited to her coachs decision to skate a heavy schedule of events this season.I felt it had to be this way. I had a long break and I needed to polish my elements and my programs in competition, she said.Lipnitskaia, the world silver medallist , fell on a triple salchow and never recovered. She put her hands down on a triple flip, popped two other triples, and didnt complete a triple-double combination. The 16-year-old still finished second ahead of Japans Kanako Murakami, but that was hardly a consolation.I dont really know what happened, she said. That was the worst skate of my life.In the ice dancing, Frances Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron won the gold after the reigning world champions, Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy, had a rare fall during their routine. Lanottes boot collided with his partners and he lost his balance and fell to the ice.It was really unexpected, Cappellini said. It hasnt happened to us in a long time to make a mistake like that in competition.American siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani led after the short dance but lost points on their rotational lift and other elements, finishing second, just ahead of the Italians.Chinas Peng Cheng and Zhang Hao took the gold in the pairs event, leading a Chinese sweep of the podium. Yu Xiaoyu and Jin Yang were second, followed by Wang Xuehan and Wang Lei in third.
